Moving from The Netherlands to Croatia

To start with the basic question, from where to where did you move?

We decided to leave The Netherlands. I didn’t anticipate it to be so stressful and that’s why it’s important to choose a good moving company.

The whole process is long and needs a lot of preparation. Moving across the continent it’s not a simple task. Moving stuff is just a small but very important part of relocation.

We choose to move our stuff first and then deal with paperwork. Luckily most of the research can be done online and in the shortest time possible. One part is done and hopefully, everything else will go promptly as planned.

Definitely! Was choosing a moving company an easy process?

During my online research, I came across numerous websites offering moving services. Unfortunately none was offering to move to Croatia. After almost giving up I came across sirelo.nl. After a couple of simple questions, I got offers from two companies. The price was very similar but we decided to choose one that was closer to home. The company is owned by a person who speaks my own language which is very important when communicating your wishes. After a couple of e-mails, I was sure everything is going to be done as I planned.

How did the moving day go? We are sure a lot of emotions kicked in.

On the day I was very nervous. I spent 26 years living in The Netherlands. Looking around all the boxes I couldn’t grasp that 26 years fits in 55 boxes.

The driver came around 8, two hours before I thought he would come. After a small chat and coffee, we started to load our boxes. It was 3 of us so loading went very fast. He even took some extra flower pots to make my mother happy. After signing some papers off he went. I couldn’t have imagined an easier process. It took me 2 months to pack everything.

If you could give some advice to other people moving, what would it be?

Time. Time is the most important thing when planning relocation. Fortunately, we own our house in Croatia so that made it a bit easier. We knew where we were moving.

But time to prepare everything beforehand is very important.

After you already made a plan to move and before looking for a moving service, it’s important to take time to figure out what to move!

Since we have already furnished the house we didn’t move any furniture. Some we will sell and some are just not worth anything and will go to the recalling plant.

You don’t know how much stuff you have until you start to fill the boxes.

It’s very important to select the stuff you really want and plan to use. There is no point in packing everything just because you have it. Leaving somewhere for a long time has a huge impact on stuff that has emotional value, but do you really need all 26 bird cards and 100 Christmas cards? No, you don’t. Take time and select stuff you want/need and say goodbye to everything else. You are moving to make new memories…
